The different landscapes of Oregon offer the perfect environment for a variety of farming practices. Cropland, rangeland, and pasture make this state agricultural land base. In the US Oregon is the top producer of loganberries, blackberries, raspberries, and peppermint. This state is a leader in American logging and tree production thanks to its extensive woods. However, excessive harvesting, forest fires, and legal disputes over negligent forestry practices have hampered the timber industry of Oregon. One of the largest salmon industries in the world is still present in Oregon. Since the majority of wild salmon and shellfish populations have decreased, a sizable portion of the salmon and shellfish taken in this state are farm raised. Rockfish, ocean perch, tuna, and flounder are among the additional fish species that are fished in Oregon. One of Oregon’s major sectors is tourism which is based on the natural attractions of the state such as its lakes, beaches, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, and woods. One of the first zoos west of the Mississippi is located in Oregon. More than 10% of the lumber in the US comes from Oregon. Manufacturing of forest products made up over 33% of the state economy in the late 20th century. Gravel, building sand, and stones account for a sizable portion of mining output in terms of the value of Oregon. Even though quarrying happens all over the state the majority of mined products are found close to urban areas. The economy of Oregon also heavily depends on the natural gas production at Mist Gas Field in the northwest of the state.
